Interviewing Guidelines
SRL Checklist

YOUR CHALLENGE: We want you to help us change the narratives around stereotypes and misconceptions, and want to hear about a time when you and your peers felt misunderstood, labeled, or stereotyped. How did it feel? What did you do in response? You will film and interview students in your school and community to find out how young people break down misconceptions and challenge stereotypes about who they are.
____________________________________________________
ASSIGNMENT:
  • Film and interview students (there is no # requirement, but make sure each interview counts) in your school and community to find out how young people break down misconceptions and challenge stereotypes about who they are. Read these guidelines on how to find the right interview subjects.
  • Your final goal will be to create a montage of the best THREE interviews.
  • NEW! You are also required to get at least 10 additional shots of each interview subject: straight-on interview with the subject answering questions; video portrait; and detail shots (i.e. their hands, their eyes, what they’re wearing, an action they’re describing, etc.)

  • How can stereotypes be harmful?
  • What do others assume about you because of your race, gender, etc.?
  • Tell us about a time you felt misunderstood.
  • Tell us about a time you built a bridge by being more understanding of another person’s culture, religion, community, background, etc.
  • What does it mean to be you?
  • What do people get wrong about you?
